Crossing Drake’s Passage

I thought I would create a post about Drake’s Passage for those who are concerned about crossing it. I first learned about The Drake from an Instagram video, I started following lots of Antarctica accounts and it appeared on my newsfeed.

The Drake is one of the world’s roughest seas, as the body of the sea is between South America’s Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica.

We were briefed about what to expect and showed what the weather would have in store for us. The forecast showed green, lots of applause around the room. The previous ships had experienced really bad weather, nearly everyone was seasick people were not allowed to leave their cabins.

We experienced something like 0.5-2, which was really nothing in comparison but it can cause discomfort having a boat rock so much. It did cross my mind that we were so remote and away from the rest of humanity, who would save us. Luckily we did not experience anything bad so we had a smooth ride.

Things to consider:

  • Motion sickness tablets
  • Bands
  • Keep all valuables safely stored
  • One hand for the ship
  • Do not put your hands between the door
